Create a backup to preserve your conversation history. You can use this to restore history if you lose your device or switch to a new one.
You can restore your history from a backup anytime. Please be aware: History can only be restored from a backup of the same platform (iOS to iOS, Android to Android, and desktop to desktop). This means you cannot restore a backup on a mobile device when you created the backup file on your desktop.
Note:
- Backups are not compatible across different platforms.
- Backing up on an old version and restoring that backup on a newer version is possible, but not vice versa.
- You cannot restore your backup if you have forgotten the password.
- Please do not use your Wire password as your backup password.

On desktop (macOS, Windows, or on Wire for web)
- Select Settings
:
- Select Back Up:
- Set a password (optional) and select Back Up Now:
- Select Save file:
- Select where to save the file. Make sure you store the backup file in a safe place, as it is not protected by Wire´s end-to-end encryption.
To restore a backup
Be aware: History can only be restored from a backup of the same platform, like desktop to desktop, but not mobile to desktop.

On mobile

On iOS
Back up conversations
- Select Settings

- Select Account.
- Select Back up or Restore Conversations.
- Select Back Up Now.
- You can set a password for your file (at least 8 characters). You will be required to enter this password to restore the history on a new device.
Select Back Up Now. - The backup will be compressed. If you use a password, Wire alos encrypts the backup file. Make dure to store the password in a secure place.

- Select Back up or Restore Conversations.
- Select Restore from Backup
- Select the backup file.
- Enter the file password if needed and Select Continue.
On Android
Back up conversations
In your conversation list:- Select the menu button

- Select Settings
.
- Select Back up & restore conversations.
- Select Create Backup.
- You have the option to set a password. You will be required to enter this password to restore the history on a new device.
- Select Back Up.
- Select Save File.
- Select a secure place on your device to save the file. The backup will be compressed and encrypted with a password you set here.
Restore a backup
You can only restore a backup of the same platform.
- Select the menu button

- Select Back up & restore conversations.
- Select RESTORE FROM BACKUP.
- Select Choose Backup File.
- Select the backup file, enter the file password if you created one, and select Continue
