Back up your conversation history

Create a backup to preserve your conversation history. You can use this to restore history if you lose your device or switch to a new one.

You can restore your history from a backup anytime on any platform, for example, create a backup on your desktop and restore it on your Android device.

Note:

  • Backing up on an old version and restoring that backup on a newer version is possible, but not vice versa
  • You can't restore your backup if you have forgotten the password
  • Please do not use your Wire password as your backup password
  1. On desktop (macOS, Windows, or on Wire for web)

    1. Select Settings :


    2. Select Back Up:


    3. Set a password (optional) and select Back Up Now:


    4. Select Save file:



    5. Select where to save the file. Make sure you store the backup file in a safe place, as it is not protected by Wire´s end-to-end encryption.


    To restore a backup



    1. Select Settings :



    2. Select Restore:

  2. On mobile

    Create a backup to preserve your conversation history. You can use this to restore history if you lose your device or switch to a new one. You will need a fresh login to restore your history from a backup.

    On iOS

    Back up conversations

    1. Select Settings .
    2. Select Account.
    3. Select Back up or Restore Conversations.
    4. Select Back Up Now.
    5. You can set a password for your file (at least 8 characters). You will be required to enter this password to restore the history on a new device. 
      Select Back Up Now.
    6. The backup will be compressed. If you use a password, Wire also encrypts the backup file. Make dure to store the password in a secure place.


      Restore a backup

      1. Select Settings .
      2. Select Account.
      3. Select Back up or Restore Conversations.
      4. Select Restore from Backup
      5. Select the backup file.
      6. Enter the file password if needed and Select Continue

       

      On Android

      Back up conversations

      In your conversation list:

      1. Select the menu button .
      2. Select Settings .
      3. Select Back up & restore conversations.
      4. Select Create Backup.
      5. You have the option to set a password. You will be required to enter this password to restore the history on a new device.
      6. Select Back Up.
      7. Select Save File.
      8. Select a secure place on your device to save the file. The backup will be compressed and encrypted with a password you set here.

      Restore a backup

      1. Select the menu button .
      2. Select Settings .
      3. Select Back up & restore conversations.
      4. Select RESTORE FROM BACKUP.
      5. Select Choose Backup File.
      6. Select the backup file, enter the file password if you created one, and select Continue
