How does Wire handle reports of misuse?

  • Updated

We may disable accounts if we believe the account activity violates our Terms of Use.

Encryption and Data Access.

Wire is an end-to-end encrypted platform. Wire does not have access to the content of communications between users and cannot review, retrieve, or produce message content as part of any misuse investigation. Any action Wire takes in response to a misuse report is necessarily limited to account-level measures based on information Wire holds.

Just like any other communication platform though, sadly there are fraudsters out there who are using platforms like Wire for their own gain. We want to make you aware that it comes down to how you interact with people that determine your vulnerability to fraudulent attacks. For example, you may be lured into accepting a connection request and having a conversation with someone you think you can trust, but actually whose motives aren’t genuine.

Examples of scams

To keep up to date on the latest scams that could affect our users we monitor all kinds of outlets, including Twitter, cyber security forums, and the World Economic Forum. The most frequent scam we are aware of that involves Wire is a job applications scam. Fraudsters impersonate large organizations and offer jobs or interviews over messaging platforms such as Wire. Most often the victim is someone who would become a remote working employee. They get offered the job and are then asked to buy a laptop and mobile through a portal that is set up by the fraudster under the promise that they will be reimbursed when joining the company.
The reality is that there is no job, the interviewee never receives the laptop or mobile, and the fraudster has collected the money and closed their Wire account.

What to do as a business if this happens to you?

If criminals or fraudsters masquerade as your business to set up and conduct fake interviews, Wire undertakes to promptly review, and, where necessary, take appropriate action.

Please follow this process:

1. Reach out to Wire immediately and directly by visiting support.wire.com.

2. Select Submit a request.

3. Select Report misuse as the issue reason. We prioritize requests like this in our support queue.

4. Provide as much detail as possible:

  • Wire username of the suspicious user (for example, @johnsmith)
  • Statements from defrauded individuals, etc. screenshots of the fraudulent activity are especially helpful. Our support team may request additional information, so provide as much detail as possible with your initial submission to ensure the fastest resolution.

Assessment of Reports.
Wire reserves the right to assess the legitimacy and sufficiency of any report submitted before taking any action. Submission of a report does not in itself give rise to any obligation on Wire's part to act, and Wire may request additional information as part of its assessment.

What to do as an interviewee if this happens to you?

If you’re attending a job interview / or have secured a role, always ask the company to arrange your work tools — you should not have to purchase equipment on your own. Reputable companies will organize the procurement of such items and ship them to your address.
If you are in any doubt whatsoever, contact a senior employee of the company in question and ask if these are standard business practices. Look for a reputable figure with a long tenure with the company and frequent posts on a platform like LinkedIn.

 Criminal Conduct and Law Enforcement.

Where reported conduct may constitute criminal activity, Wire encourages reporters to preserve all relevant evidence and report directly to the competent law enforcement authorities in their jurisdiction. Wire does not act as an intermediary between users and public authorities and will not report user conduct to law enforcement on a third party's behalf. Wire responds to all lawful requests received directly from competent authorities and maintains established procedures to do so promptly and in full compliance with applicable law.

Wire’s Commitment

Our commitment is to help your business stay safe. Wire treats misuse of its platform seriously and will not tolerate fraudulent or deceptive conduct by its users. Upon receiving a report, Wire undertakes to promptly review the matter and, where warranted, take such action as it determines to be proportionate in the circumstances.
